Narrator 1, Narrator 2, Joseph, Mary, Angel 1, Angel 2, Angel 3, Mr Innkeeper, Mrs Innkeeper, Wise man 1, Wise man 2, Wise man 3, Herod, Shepherd 1, Shepherd 2, Shepherd 3, Stable Animals (Sheep 1, Sheep 2, Sheep 3, Cows, Sheep, Donkeys, Ducks) played by pre-school children.

(Stable set up on right hand side on chancel with the Animals in the stable)
Narrator 1 It was the night before Christmas and Bethlehem was in chaos following the decision to have a census so everyone was busy and especially so at the inn
Mrs Innkeeper Where are you Mr Innkeeper?
Stable Animals He's a very nice man
Mr Innkeeper Thank you, very kind
Mrs Innkeeper Where are you Mr Innkeeper?
Animals He's a very nice man
Mr Innkeeper Thanks again, I'm with the animals in the stable just getting them sorted
Mrs Innkeeper Hurry up. We are full so it's going to be a very busy night Mr Innkeeper
Stable Animals He's a very nice man
Mr Innkeeper Goodnight Cows - they reply MOOOO, Goodnight sheep - they reply BAAAA, Goodnight donkeys - they reply EEEE AWWWW, Goodnight ducks - they reply QUACK QUACK
(Mr and Mrs Innkeeper sit down)
(Joseph onto chancel at left hand side and Mary at the other side. The three Angels start walking to Mary)
Narrator 1 There is excitement in the air, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I can tell you. Just wait till you see what happens next (pointing at the Angels walking towards Mary)
Mary Who are you?
Angel 1 Mary, don't be afraid. I bring you great news. God has chosen you to have his son and you will call him Jesus
Choir (sing) Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day
Angels 2&3 It's really exciting, isn't it?
Joseph Who are you?
Angel 1 Joseph, I'm an Angel of God and Mary is going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit and you'll call him Jesus
Choir (sing) Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day
Angels 2&3 It's really exciting, isn't it?
Narrator 1 Told you it's exciting. That night, Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem to be enrolled in a census. He took Mary and the baby Jesus with him
Narrator 1 (to congregation) Let's sing 'Little Donkey' - we will sing the first verse and chorus then please join in after that
(Mary and Joseph and the donkey go up an aisle and come back down the other, arriving at the front of the chancel)
(Mr & Mrs Innkeeper busy cleaning)
Narrator 1 Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem but no matter how hard they searched they could not get a room for the night
Narrator 1 They arrived at the Inn
(Knock, knock, knock)
Mrs Innkeeper (shouting) There's no room at the Inn
(Knock, knock, knock)
Mrs Innkeeper (shouting) Who is it, Mr Innkeeper?
Stable Animals He's a very nice man
(Knock, knock, knock)
Mr Innkeeper I will see who it is
Joseph & Mary We need a room for the night
Mr Innkeeper I have no rooms but the stable is lovely and cosy (points at the stable)
Mr Innkeeper Will this do?
Joseph & Mary Thank you Mr Innkeeper
Stable Animals He's a very nice man
(Mary and Joseph walk to the stable and sit on the chairs)
Narrator 1 So in a stable with cows (MOO), sheep (BAA), donkeys (EE AWW) and ducks (QUACK QUACK), the baby Jesus was born
Choir (sing) Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day
Narrator 2 This is not the end of the story, there's lots more to tell
(3 shepherds and 3 sheep in aisle at left hand end of front pew)
Narrator 2 In a field a few miles away there were shepherds tending their sheep
Angel 1 (to the shepherds) I'm an angel of God and I have great news
Shepherds Ahhhhh (shepherds and sheep run in front of chancel)
Angel 1 The son of God is born tonight. Go and see the King
Angels 2&3 It's really exciting, isn't it?
All Shepherds Fantastic! Where is he born?
Angel 1 Bethlehem
All shepherds How will we find him?
Angel 1 Follow the star
Narrator 2 The shepherds made their way to the stable in Bethlehem where they found baby Jesus in a Manger
Choir (sing) Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day
Narrator 2 (to congregation) Let us all sing 'Away in a manger', we will sing the first verse then please join in
(Wise men walk to the front of the chancel at the end of the hymn)
Narrator 2 Hundreds of miles away, three Wise Men had been following a star that they knew had special importance to mankind
(an assistant carries star to the chancel and goes behind Herod who walks onto the chancel)
Wise man 1 There's the star, let's follow it to the King
Herod I am Herod and I am the King, uuu huh
Wise man 2 Well, actually, you're not really
Herod I rock and I am the King
Wise man 3 It's the son of God we are looking for
Wise man 1 Not the King of Rock
Herod Bring him to me as it will be lonely this Christmas without him to hold
All Wise men Yes, Yes, Yes NO WAY, follow that star
Narrator 2 Let us pray
Wise man 2 In all the excitement we should think of others and what they have done to protect us
Wise man 3 Just as the Wise Men did to protect Jesus, we give thanks to God for all those who look after us
Mrs Innkeeper Our Mums, Dads, Grannies and Papas to name a few and to God through his son Jesus Christ. Amen
Narrator 2 The Wise men knew what Herod would do vowed never to return to him. Let us sing 'We Three Kings
(Wise men go up one aisle with the star in front of them then down the other aisle, arriving at the stable)
Narrator 2 The three Wise Men followed the star until it rested above the stable in Bethlehem
Wise Man 1 We have travelled from afar to worship you. We bring Gold
Wise Man 2 Frankincense
Wise Man 3 and Myrrh
(Wise Men sit on chancel at side of stable)
Narrator1 So over 2000 years ago, the son of God, Jesus Christ, was born to save us all. Let us pray
Wise Man 1 We have relived the birth of Jesus which took place over 200 years ago. In the next few days we celebrate his birth with our family and friends
Shepherd 1 We will all have a great time playing with our new presents, with the presents representing the Wise Mens' gifts to Jesus
Herod We are lucky that we can enjoy this time in peace. Many others around the world do not.
Mr Innkeeper We have so very much and they have so very little
Angel 1 So during this time, make us stop and think of Jesus and not just ourselves and remember that it was Jesus who put the Christ in Christmas. Amen
Narrator 2 So that ends our Nativity - see you next year
