This Nativity Play script may be freely copied and performed non-commercially. It was originally performed by members of the Rankin Sunday School and Youth Group

Characters: Narrator 1, Narrator 2, Angel, Innkeeper, Mary, Joseph, Herod, 3 Wise men (from Youth Group), Sheep, Shepherds, Cows, Donkeys, Duck

Stable set up to the right on the chancel
Wise men upstairs in the gallery
Pre-school children in the front pew dressed as animals
Narrator 1 Well here we are again. Yes, it's that time of year already
Narrator 2 Yes it is, so let's begin. We have a stable but where are the cows?
Cows "MOO" and walk to the stable
Narrator 1 Where are the sheep?
Sheep "BAAA" and walk to the stable
Narrator 2 Where are the donkeys?
Donkeys "EEEAAAW" and walk to the stable
Narrator 1 And we have him //(points at the duck)
Duck "QUACKS" twice and walks to the stable
Narrator 1 It was the night before Jesus our King was born and all was quiet
Stable animals all make their sounds with Duck saying "QUACK, QUACK" after they are all finished
Joseph and Mary walk onto the chancel
Narrator 2 So let us tell you the story that led to the day Jesus our KIng and Saviour was born. Let's start with Mary (point at Mary)

Angel Mary, don't be afraid. I bring you great news. God has chosen you to have his son and you will call him Jesus
Narrator 1 Joseph (pointing at Joseph), who was engaged to marry Mary, discovered that she was pregnant and planned to call off their engagement. This troubled Joseph as he was a good man and he loved Mary
Joseph sitting on the chancel
Angel Joseph, I am an Angel of God and Mary is going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. You will call him Jesus which means Saviour
Narrator 1 So that night, in order to prevent bringing shame on their families, Mary and Joseph left and travelled to Bethlehem
All children, Choir and Youth Group to sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday" We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We're going to Bethlehem today
We're going to see the King (clap, clap)
Narrator 2 Now that surprised you, didn't it
Let's sing "Little Donkey". We'll sing the first verse and then please join in
Mary and Joseph go up one aisle and back down the other one
Innkeeper to chancel
Innkeeper I do love a census; all these people coming to Bethlehem at such short notice that I can charge more and I'm still full - Wonderful!
Knock three times
Innkeeper (pretends to open a door) Go away. I'm full up. Hee, hee, hee, lots of money for me, me, me
Knock three times
Innkeeper I said Go Away. There's no room at the inn
Mary and Joseph Please sir, we need a room
Narrator 1 In the dress rehearsals the innkeeper was much nicer and they only had to knock once
Innkeeper I wasn't full up then, was I? Okay, okay, okay, I don't have a room but you can have the stable
Mary and Joseph Thank you
Mary and Joseph sit down next to the manger and Innkeeper sits in stable
Narrator 1 So what's next then?
Narrator 2 Well most stories have good and bad in them and this one's no different. Look! (points at Herod)
Herod walks onto chancel
Herod I'm Herod and I'm the King
I rule over all you know
The important thing to remember is
I've got my wife's permission to say so
Narrator 1 But are we not missing someone or something?
All the animals Yes, the wise men
All the wise men (in gallery) Hello, we're up here this year
Herod (shouting) Who are you?
Wise man 1 I'm a wise man
Wise man 2 I'm a wise man too
Wise man 3 I'm a wise man three
Herod (shouting) What are you doing here?
Wise man 1 We're following that star
Wise man 2 To find the son of God
Wise man 3 The new born King
Herod (shouting) When you find him, bring him to me so that I can worship him
Narrator 1 Why are you up there?
Wise man 1 We got slightly lost
Wise man 2 And it's far away from Herod
Wise man 3 And we wanted to make sure no one was sleeping up here
Narrator 2 What are you planning to do next?
All children, Choir and Youth Group to sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday" We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)

Narrator 1 Let us sing "We three Kings of orient are"
Herod walks and sits in stable
Wise men come downstairs and sit in front pew
Youth Group Prayer 1
Sheep from stable join shepherds at front of chancel
Narrator 2 There were shepherds tending their sheep
Shepherds and sheep saying We shepherd here
We shepherd there
We shepherd almost everywhere
Always moving like a busy busy bee
Only stopping for a cup of tea
Angel moves onto chancel
Angel Don't be afraid. I bring great news. The son of God our King and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is born tonight in Bethlehem
All children, Choir and Youth Group to sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday" We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We're going to Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We're going to Bethlehem today
We're going to see the King (clap, clap)
Narrator 1 Quite a catchy little number isn't it? Anyway, the shepherds and sheep made their way to Bethlehem
Narrator 2 On arriving at the stable they saw the baby Jesus in the manger. Let us sing "Away in a manger". We will sing the first verse then please join in after that
Shepherds and sheep sit in the stable
Narrator 1 The wise men eventually arrived in Bethlehem
All children, Choir and Youth Group to sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday" We've arrived in Bethlehem (clap, clap)
We've arrived in Bethlehem (clap, clap)
We've arrived in Bethlehem
And we kneel before the King (clap, clap)
Wise man 1 We've travelled from afar to worship you and bring gifts of Gold
Wise man 2 Frankincense
Wise man 3 And Myrrh
Narrator 1 So over 2000 years ago, the son of God, Jesus Christ, was born to save us all. Let us pray
Youth Group Prayer 2
All children, Choir and Youth Group to sing to the tune of "Happy Birthday" We've arrived in Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We've arrived in Bethlehem today (clap, clap)
We've arrived in Bethlehem today
And we can see the King (clap, clap)
Narrator 2 So that ends our Nativity but remember it was Jesus who put the Christ in Christmas and see you next year
